Nickel-Safe Ice Machine Cleaner: Nu-Calgon 4287-34

The Nu-Calgon 4287-34 Nickel-Safe Ice Machine Cleaner is a specially formulated citric/phosphoric food-grade product designed to remove scale deposits from ice makers with nickel-plated or tin-plated evaporators. It was the industry’s first nickel-safe product, developed in collaboration with Manitowoc and approved for use in machines made by Manitowoc and other manufacturers utilizing nickel.

To use the cleaner, follow the manufacturer's instructions or use 16 fluid ounces with three gallons of system water. The number one problem category for ice machines is water-related, with lime scale being the most frequent issue. During an ice maker’s cycle, the naturally occurring dissolved minerals in the water can form lime scale as the water freezes into ice, leading to obstructions such as plugged distribution holes and restricted water flow.

It is a common misconception that flakers are immune to scale problems, but they can also scale-up and eventually lead to broken parts.
